Have the Chargers Lost It? Merriman Should Not Play!

I have to say that I was confused by the lack of communication out from A.J. Smith and Norv Turner as it relates to Shawn Merriman's injury and playing status.  In the NFL, the Trainer, General Manager and Head Coach all have roles in dissemination of information to the media as it relates to players let alone the super star caliber players.  How the press is handled follows protocol and so the degree to which representatives were quiet during Shawn's trek across the states to find any doctor who could offer a different opinion was odd.  He found that competent sports surgeons often agree that when a knee is torn up that bad, the best course of action is surgery and rehabilitation no matter how long it takes.  For crying out load Shawn, you are 24 with the best years of your pro football life ahead of you.  Shut it down and do it now so you can begin the healing process.  Atleast you got some extra frequent flyer miles.

So there it was, with Charger leadership tight-lipped on the subject and Shawn Merriman traveling the free world trumpeting his desire to play despite an injury in danger of escalating to the point of career ending event.  Now, I thought it was strange that the Chargers leadership was quiet and Shawn's desires to play despite the knee issues loud and clear until I saw an article in a local papers sports section that suggested the signing of Jyles Tucker to an extension was an indication that the team was resigned to letting Shawn leave via free agency.  Something is going on here.  It just doesn't feel right.

Yes, I know.  LT would have you believe that we should not hold the warrior down.  Let's let him play.  But the Chargers have to apply common sense equally with their star players.  They would not risk LT's future if he had two torn knee ligaments.  Not a chance.  So why then, will they allow what clearly looks to be a bad idea in letting Shawn play, move forward at the expense of both the team and the player.  Correct me if I have read the reports wrong.  Playing with this injury could abruptly end his career.

Players will always want to play.  I agree with this and would say that as fans we admire this qualilty in football players and almost expected.  I would expect Shawn to want to play but when does concern for his health and well-being as well as his pro football future override and lead then down the road of taking care of the knee in a way that insures his health for years to come? The decision to shut it down is mutually beneficial.  Shawn is an awesome talent and a joy to watch but I for one do not want to see this kid derailed in what could be a Hall of Fame Career.  If the Chargers won't do the right thing Shawn, please reconsider and live to compete another day!  Your future depends on It!
